WRITING 11.00
Writing - please read this . The words in bold are explained at the end I have been going through a dilemma. I would like you to do more writing as I think it is really beneficial for your English. I don’t mean only formal letters or an academic type essays or any specific kind of writing but even just writing your thoughts instead of speaking them.
Writing has the advantage that you have time to think before you express yourself and it often brings your attention to when you have difficulties saying something so then you can seek help and clear up that problem. Or alternatively you may think everything is correct and because it is written, there is time to look at it and correct anything that is not.
On top of all this you may get to like writing as a way of clarifying your own thoughts or communicating with other people. This is obviously true for many people and it explains the success of blogs and twitter and other forms of social media ( that I probably haven’t even heard of! )
Some English teachers encourage their students to write a type of diary in an exercise book and write in it each class. I was going to do this but back to my dilemma, who writes by hand these days? Hardly anybody !. Whatever type of writing you need or want to do, it will probably be on the computer . On the computer you have certain advantages . In my case it is llegible . You can also use the spell corrector and you should. As ESL / EAL students you can use the grammar corrector also. You can use an online dictionary or even google to check words you are unsure of.
So after all that, I have decided we will do regular writing on the computer for half an hour on a Monday. I will give you topics as suggestions or you can write whatever you like . It can just be your thoughts at the time or it can be something you want to practise. You can then decide if you want me to respond just to what you are saying or if you want me to correct it all.
The only thing I ask is that you give this a try … even if you write gobbledegook although preferably not. However, I won’t correct it unless you run the spell check through it at the end and you at least look at the grammar check. Then send me your writing. ( jane.huffam@education.tas.gov.au )
In the future ( when I get some IT help ) we will work out a better way to do it with a blog or something but for the time being, please leave half an hour at the end of the computer session and do some writing and send it to me. Suggestions for today are under this.
a dilemma - a problem or something requiring a decision
beneficial – good for someone
seek- look for
clarifying – making clear
llegible – possible to read
ESL / EAL- English as a second or another language - students learning in an English speaking country whose native language is not English
Gobbledegook – mumbo jumbo – something that is not , clear , well thought out

........................................................... Other useful sites
A /The BBC has lots of different possibilities that may be of interest to you http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/learnit/
This website has loads of grammar, vocab, news exercises, quizzes and all sorts of things. In fact there is so much -it is easy to get lost. There are 2 things here I think are really good (plenty more but I haven’ had time to explore them all)
A series called Flatmates (good for colloquial language ) and a news program (News English) where you can read and listen ( I think) and difficult words are explained
b/. VILC Try this website http://www.virtualilc.com
The user name is 99vilcst and the password is snowy. On here you can listen to up to date news items and do exercises ( easy news)
There are grammar activities. Sometimes the sound doesn’t work but you can still do the activities
D http://a4esl.org/
Careful to do quizzes related to your knowledge of the English language and not ones that require knowledge of facts you really can’t be expected to know
E. Of course you can simply search interesting information by using Google (Google.com)
And explore the articles that come up. Always read the source before you start ( the address will give you some idea .. there are some nutty people out there !) Try and read only reliable sounding sources
5-10 minutes before the end of this class - email me and tell me what you did and why it was /not useful. Jane.huffam@polytechnic.tas.edu.au

After that here are some exercises on can vs could
http://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en/exercises/modals/can.htm
http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/ar/english-grammar/verbs/modal-verbs/can-or-could - scroll down and do quiz
and here is one on phrasal verbs
http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/phrasal-verbs/exercises.html I don’t usually think it is a good idea to study lots of phrasal verbs together with the same verb but I think it helps to get a feel for what meaning the prepositions might add ( ie up … positive , complete , down – negative etc )
so try a few ( only ) of these quizzes bring is quite a good one
After that there are plenty more recommendations on this page - ask me if you need help finding or doing somethign
